Timnit Gebru, a former Google AI researcher who was fired in 2020, has said that the
current state of artificial intelligence (AI) research is like a "gold rush."
She made the comments in an interview with The Guardian, published on May 22, 2023.
Gebru said that the current AI landscape is characterized by
a "race to the bottom" in terms of ethics and standards.
She said that companies are rushing to develop AI products and
services without considering the potential negative impacts.
Timnit Gebru is an Ethiopian-born computer scientist who works on algorithmic bias and data mining.
She is an advocate for diversity in technology and co-founder of Black in AI,
a community of Black researchers working in artificial intelligence (AI).
She is the founder of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR).
